Great service by Nevada and her team Good food with flexibility of options A buzzing atmosphere All of this would explain why The Hard Antler was fully packed on the 2 evenings we visited. We asked if we could have only the jalapeño poppers not the fries. It wasn’t a problem! The poppers were served hot and were delicious! The vegetarian pasta was delicious too and had plenty of veggies. The vegetarian burger was nice and sumptuous. We shared the dessert - cheesecake - which was a good finish to a satisfying meal. This was a real pity because the staff were so inviting and friendly, and I just loved the atmosphere. We both ordered salt and pepper squid meals, and at first were impressed with the flavor but ohhh goodness it was so rubbery I’ve never had squid that badly over cooked. It was like beef jerky. The chips were some of the best chips I’ve had at a pub, the seasoning was yummo. And the seasoning on the squid was also tasty, so I still ate it. Just sad about the texture. On a long drive from Franz Josef to Wanaka, this is a good place to have a break and a drink or bite to eat. It very much has a traditional pub atmosphere, with a decent choice of drinks and food, served by a great team. Great place for a good meal. Huge servings, very yum. Our waitress Nevada was fabulous. She had lots of local knowledge , good at her job, friendly and a great smile. It’s a small village without much option for evening meals, if you’re after a good pub style feed this is the place for you. Very nice food, staff were great and helpful. Portion size just right. Small selection of beers and a cider on tap, and more in the fridge. Precious vegans might want to stay away due to the antlers on display - more venison for me! (I had the Hard Antler burger + chips.) We’ve been here twice during our stay in Haast. The staff are really nice and friendly. The fish burger was delightful. Frittata was good but a bit salty. Chicken burger was quite dry unfortunately.
