Underrated spot found! Good food. Uni-student hotspot. Amazing little touches on each dish (coffee with caramel popcorn, chips with many spices, etc) from such an inexpensive secret find. Service is fast even though its seemingly always busy/crowded.

Very bad service!!! After a discussion re the opening hours of the cafe on their website, and while I was quite happy to wait to order my coffees, for myself and family from out of town, the staff behind the counter were poking faces behind my back. For a hospitality industry this is appalling. I will not go to this cafe ever again and will tell all I meet how bad the service is.

Coffee is fine, but it’s a very busy place. Not surprised as it’s in the (free) museum and right next to the university. Staff seem to keep up for the most part but I can see how it would take a while if you ordered food, queue never seems to die.

The downstairs Cafe is probably one of the worst places I've eaten in quite some time.
Disorganised chaos Is one way to put it.
I feel a better system with clear barriers to prevent people table hopping and cutting the queue would help. And then staff allowing another table to cut in and place their order while lines of people were waiting for a seat. A seating chart with the tables that are occupied and then crossed off when the next guests approach the desk would stop staff looking so clueless when trying to see if they can seat people. The food was atrocious! I had the chicken schnitzel I was awful the facoccia bun was dry with a wee dolop of dressing under the chicken and then two massive piles of coleslaw on top
Hubby had a greasy mess of a so called breakfast bagel. Bagel was slid as a rock.
Loud, overpriced, disorganised, barely following covid guidelines and the food was ghastly.
I do not recommend and will not be back.
P. S your menus are a hot mess, so hard to read when u have to flip the pages upside down and turn them around. Next time click. On the button that says 'flip along the long edge' when double sided printing and dry them off after u clean them they were all stuck together!
The Otago Museum Cafe provides a delightful dining experience with its carefully curated ambiance and exceptional service. As an architect, I appreciate the thoughtful design elements that contribute to a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. The zoning of the museum, just at the entrance makes you hungry as you enter. All the aroma and people eating. Talk about free will and manifestation of consent eh??
None the less the combination of modern and traditional elements, along with a well-planned layout, creates a comfortable and visually appealing environment. The cafe offers a variety of seating options to cater to different preferences. Furthermore, the staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, ensuring that visitors feel well-cared for during their dining experience. Overall, the Otago Museum Cafe is a recommended destination for those seeking a satisfying meal accompanied by a great ambiance and excellent service.

Great atmosphere and lovely staff. The menu was somewhat limiting if you want something savoury and don't like bagels. However the cheese scone we tried was nice, the coffee average, and the sweet items in the display case looked very inviting.
