We came across the wonderful owners of 木子家on a lazy Saturday morning, expecting a brief breakfast stop before we leave Hualien. It turned out to be an incredible experience.
We learned about how beans are roasted and what characteristics can be achieved depending on the different machines they have. We then also got a chance to taste the coffee paired with a few homemade cookies. It was absolutely amazing and wonderful to witness this passion the owners have for their craft. Unfortunately, we were in a rush to catch a train and would have loved to stay longer to chat and learn more. So try to give yourself some time (>1h) to really enjoy their company!

Great homestay experience, feel the owner's warmth thru their coffee / pastry
Located 5mins walk away from coast, muzi is a 3 storey house converted into a coffee lovers lodge, with a cafe (helmed by the owner and wife themselves) om level 1, and level 2 and 3 consisting of 2 rooms on each floor. The 2nd level is made up of 2 good sized rooms, each with its queen size bed, ensuite bathroom (good water pressure + temp control), 3rd level is made up of a 4 person room (2 queen sized bed) with ensuite bathroom, and a 2 person room with queen sized bed (but with bathroom located just outside the room (but with a clever divider to ensure privacy when you needed to use the bathroom at night).
The lodge is angled towards woody accent (think wood tables, chairs, bedframes, staircase etc) and gives off a nice and inviting vibe (especially when the owner starts dabbling in his specialty coffee brewing). Specialty here is more unorthodox than others, so think test tube style extraction, temp control, wooden ladle, freshly grounded coffee beans (i heard costa rica + some other exotic places where the beans were sourced) and get this, paired with soft water source (ie alkaline water) that is also piped through the taps in the rooms (yes, that means showering in akaline water). The owner is a purist,+and constantly seeks new ways to extract the best and most natural taste in coffee (which also means he doesnt use sugar or milk for his coffee, as these turn the coffee acidic).
The wife is a certified pastry chef, and breakfast was done by her singlehandedly on both mornings when our family of 9 took over the whole lodge (4 rooms in total). She makes a very delicious healthy breakfast, paired with her home baked bread (which can only last tops 3 days as she doesnt use preservatives). Of course, breakfast was paired with the specialty coffee as well, and sometimes, the wife bakes abit more bread to be sold (TWD100/loaf).
All in, if you are travelling with a decent sized group (6 up till 10 pax), highly recommend to check out this lodge before the owner heads north to taipei or overseas to explore. The hualien night market (zhiqiang/dong da men) is also a 5min drive away only.
