We stumbled upon the Makkal Hotel by chance. Only after did we look to see the reviews here. Until now we had been traveling in more remote places of Sri Lanka, so when reaching Arugam we have been looking for something more local than the high tourist center of Arugam.
We were greeting kindly by the owner and they were very attentive to us. Helped us find things that were to our palette (we have a two year old son so finding items not too spicy can be a challenge).
We ordered two plates of rice and mixed curry (local Sri Lanka style). We also took two large pieces of fried chicken. The chicken was absolutely delicious. Fresh, good flavor, moist, and not spicy at all! The rice and curries were great. The owner himself was extremely kind.
Overall a nice local place. We paid 2300 for two large plates with a large piece of fried chicken each. Definitely will be back again during our visit.

Overprice Scam. They know you will never come there again for food and will charge sky high prices for just plain food. The place is not clean either.
Outside visitors gets caught to this trap as there are not many eating houses.

This place tried to over charge me by 5000! No prices on there food so I guess judging by the reviews they charge the tourists what they want.
Food isn't good. As a matter of fact we took the food we didn't eat and tried to feed it to the street dogs who also wouldn't eat the food! Says a lot

ONCE I ARRIVED TO POTHUVIL TOWN,ITS ALREADY LUNCH TIME SO I SEARCHED FOR A DECENT RESTAURANT TO DINE. ITS LOCATED CLOSER TO BUS STAND.AND THE ATMOSPHERE INSIDE IS NOTHING TO COMPLAIN.AND THE FOOD TASTE AVERAGE.I ORDERED A CHICKEN BIRIYANI,IT TASTE NOTHING SPECIAL.AND THEY TOOK SO LONG TO BRING THE FOOD TO THE TABLE.

One of the badest restaurant I have ever eaten. We paid 2900 rupies and I think thats way to much. The scam the tourists totally.

I recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at Makkal Hotel in Pottuvil, and I must say it was nothing short of a disaster. The level of disappointment I encountered during my visit was beyond imaginable.
To start with, we ordered their chicken fried rice, expecting a satisfying meal. However, what arrived at our table was an abomination. The taste was so repulsive that it was nearly impossible to consume. We were left bewildered, questioning how a supposedly reputable establishment could serve such low-quality and tasteless food.
Unfortunately, hunger got the better of us, and we reluctantly forced ourselves to eat the meal. It was a grave mistake. The entire experience left us with a heavy heart and a stomach full of regret. How could a place charge a whopping 900 rupees for such atrocious food?
The service at Makkal Hotel was equally disheartening. The staff appeared disinterested, and their lack of attentiveness was evident. It seemed as though they couldn't care less about the satisfaction of their patrons. The overall atmosphere was cold and unwelcoming, leaving a bitter taste in our mouths even before we took a single bite.
One would think that a basic fried rice dish would at least contain visible chicken pieces. However, at Makkal Hotel, we had to resort to using binoculars to find any trace of chicken in the fried rice. The sheer audacity of serving a chicken fried rice without actual chicken is beyond comprehension. It felt like we were being deceived and cheated out of our hard-earned money.
In conclusion, my experience at Makkal Hotel in Pottuvil was a complete and utter disaster. The subpar food, lackluster service, and exorbitant prices left me feeling betrayed and deeply unsatisfied. I would strongly advise against anyone wasting their time, money, and taste buds on this establishment. There are far better options available in the area that prioritize quality and customer satisfaction.
I sincerely hope that Makkal Hotel takes note of these grievances and makes the necessary improvements to prevent others from experiencing the same heartbreak and frustration that my companions and I endured.
Stay away from Makkal Hotel in Pottuvil if you value your taste buds and expect a modicum of quality and service.
