The thing about Fish on the Rocks is it doesn’t need to be delicious because it’s the only restaurant in this space and so people will eat here whatever happens because people need to eat. But it IS delicious though supremely busy during tourist season. Despite us going when it was insanely busy, the food was really good. The fish was perfectly crispy, the prawns were incredible and well spiced and the calamari was cooked excellently. Huge fan, would go back every weekend if I could. Definitely the best fish and chips I’ve had since living in Cape Town the last 3 months. The seating area is ample and easy to find a seat even when it’s busy, and they also sell other goodies like ice cream and mocktails. I thought everything was also very well priced and the location is so scenic. There’s a market next door which if I can find it on here will add a review for, because it was brilliant also. I got the most delicious cinnamon flavoured cashews from there from a stall owned by twin brothers. Super cute story. If you’re driving get there early , this place can get crowded but the service is real quick, the food is really good and you can share it , large portions. Take a walk around and enjoy the view. Little but very famous fish house. Excellent hake & chips for a decent price. The fish was awesome! Great work, crew! You can sit outside, but with thin „walls“. So it’s not too windy while eating. I read the reviews on my way to Hout Bay so I was excited the try the fish and chips. The service was good, but the food was terrible. I ordered the yellowtail fish and chips. The chips were mushy and so saturated with oil, I could press the oil out with my fork. The fish had the consistency of boiled chicken. Neither the fries nor the fish had any flavor. I poured the malt vinegar from the table all over the fries, but it just washed off because of the amount of oil. The best thing that I tasted was the pickled onion. I passed all the fish and chips shops at Mariners Wharf just to come here and it definitely was not worth it. Smaller portions compared to other places yet a higher price point. Separate cost for tiny sachets of stale tartar sauce. The fish itself doesn't taste better than convenience ready-to-bake/airfry frozen foods available at any supermarket. Same with the chips. Not worth the price or effort. My wife and I went there on the 3rd day of our honeymoon trip. We had lunch there, and proceeded to experience an out of this world food poisoning by evening. We ate the hake and chips. This place is listed as a “must visit” in Cape Town. May have been very nice once, not from my experience. The food is average at best. Fair prices. Very nice view of the ocean. The area it’s in is super dodgy and the place itself seems dirty. Signs everywhere warning you to “watch your cellphone” and “watch your handbag” detract severely from the place and the experience. Would not return. Rather find a nice neat place nearby that serves the same or better quality fish where you’d feel safer. Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 2

The GPS directions are quite off, so ask a local when you are in the area, it’s further down from the initial location. The food was so good and fresh, I see why it’s a popular Cape Town spot. This is a real gem in HoutBay, from the time you set foot into this establishment you are warmly welcomed, the ladies behind counters are quick in taking your order, there is a generous amount of seating with ocean views to sit and take in the fabulous scenery around you whilst waiting for your food. Food prep time is fairly quick and served at your table. The seafood is sensational here and really fresh, absolutely tasty. Portion sizes are also generous. Service is excellent all round.
