This is one of our favorite restaurants. I have attempted to leave a review here many times, but as soon as my food hits the table, I've lost all control. Each dish we've had here has been delicious. The service is very fast and friendly. The atmosphere is very festive and fun. They've added new patio seating outside that was recently remodeled. Everyone we've taken here has been very happy with the experience.

Service was very good. Ordered the steak enchiladas and they were served very quickly and tasted great. The chips seemed a bit stale but the salsa was good.

Very poor experience tonight. Our usual takeout Mexican spot closed early for NYE, so we thought we’d give Don Maguey another shot after a couple years since our last time here.
Firstly, apparently all of their card machines suddenly stopped working in the time between I called to place the order and went to pick it up. Okay, no problem, as it was out of their control. Had to go to the ATM at Kwik Trip to get cash and go back. An inconvenience to be sure, but I honestly wasn’t annoyed hardly at all because the workers were very kind and apologetic about the issue with their machines.
Now, on to the food. My partner and I each did a pick 3 combination. The ground beef in her burrito was severely undercooked (see picture). Ground beef shouldn’t be that pink. The burritos were really more like enchiladas than burritos, as they were covered in red sauce and quite loose (not folded tightly), and not able to be eaten by hand. The pulled chicken tasted fine.
The “quesadillas” were so oily that they were legitimately soggy (see the glistening in the below picture). It’s like they weren’t grilled or pressed at all, and were just one tortilla loosely folded over.
My partner’s soft taco was also super wet. The rice that came with the meals was obviously frozen and not fresh, with random bits of corn, cubed carrots and grayish peas.
Overall, just incredibly disappointing food. We ended up getting delivery Taco Bell and were much more satisfied with that.
I like to support CG businesses when I can, but this experience unfortunately reminded me why going to East Madison or Sun Prairie for decent Mexican food is worth the trip.

Stopped in for lunch, Really cool atmosphere, spectacularly delicious food, good drinks, all paired with OUTSTANDING service. My job causes me to travel, and I’ve eaten authentic Mexican food from Mexico to all the way to Canada, from Washington state all the way down to Florida. And this was some Damn good food! But what impressed me the most and the main reason for my review was my service. I never leave reviews, but this young man Michael, I tell you… You just don’t see people working like him these days. He was completely by himself, seating folks, handling the restaurant, and bar. It was busy, with multiple parties of six or more people and more coming in. Not only was he very friendly and genuinely polite, even making small talk, but also very efficient, and very attentive. Not just with me, but with the entire restaurant and bar. Multitasking, literally running, speaking eloquently in Spanish and perfect English, while constantly checking on every table. To be honest I’ve never been more impressed with a server/bartender. My entire order came out fast, hot, and was made exactly to my specifications. This young man deserves a 2 dollar an Hour raise, a new pair of shoes, and a weeks paid vacation. I just hope the owner knows what they’ve got.

Grabbed to go food for the first time tonight! It was delicious even after the 10 min drive home. The staff was very welcoming and friendly when we went in to pick up our order. Looking forward to going back to dine in and try some margaritas!

Third visit, and last for a while. Gut rot from trying the Metate, a meat plate on the appropriately named hot stone. Fatty, grisly, and simply disappointing (only shrimp and chorizo were good). 🤢 Back to El Mariachi in Lake Mills/Watertown. -2 stars this visit.
Update--second visit was even better! Don Meguey Chimichanga and Don Meguey Quesadilla were amazing! New favorite place by far.
Very good food with excellent flavors. Burrito was large and filled with chicken and chorizo, great spices! Chicken fajitas were also good with a nice grill seasoning, also an ample portion. Ask for the hot salsa as well. Good drinks too with 34 oz tap beers. 👍
Tried this out on a date night with the wife. We were seated quickly and the restaurant didn't seem overly busy, just a few other groups. After we were seated we began looking at the menu and were brought chips, salsa, and a small container of mystery dip. The chips were fairly standard tortilla chips, and the salsa wasn't anything particularly special. The mystery dip tasted something like ranch dressing but neither of us were quite sure.
The waiter asked us if we wanted drinks right away as we were still flipping to find the drinks on the menu. We found them eventually and my wife ordered a blended margarita while I ordered mine on the rocks and a few waters. We waited a few minutes and out came two on the rocks margaritas. I managed to catch the waiter as he went to walk away and got my wife's order corrected. The margaritas were both good and the size options mean you can have as much or as little as you want.
We placed our food order. We asked for an order of chips and guacamole to start, and then both ordered the Vegetarian Burrito. A small amount of time later out came out burritos but our additional chips and guac were nowhere to be seen. The burritos were excellent. The filling was essentially fajita vegetables, hot and with a bit of crisp to them still. The burrito had a nice cheese sauce on top. The sides of rice and beans were good and complimentary to the burrito itself.
We both finished and waited a bit until I was able to flag down our waiter who brought our check. I mentioned that we hadn't gotten the guac and they took it off.
Overall, the food was really good and the service could use a bit of work. We'll likely give it another try sometime and maybe even ask what the mystery sauce is.

Stylish and modern interior, impressed they use fajita veggies for the veggie burrito - often veggie burritos are just overcooked (mushy) vegetables. Margarita was a no frills, heavy pour, which was great. Service wasn't stellar, but the server was apologetic for the forgotten guacamole appetizer and wrong drink order originally delivered. It's a convenient location for a quick date night, so we'll be back.

This is a great Mexican restaurant in the heart of Cottage Grove; probably the best one on the east side of Madison. I have eaten here three times, and every single time the food is phenomenal, the staff is attentive and helpful, and the restaurant is always clean. There are many dishes to choose from, and options for both vegetarian and meat lovers. The drinks are great too. I highly recommend you try this place!
I've been here 3 times and each time the food has been excellent. I've ordered carnitas tacos, chorizo tostadas, tamales, seafood enchiladas all have been flavorful. Service has been usually good overall I would say it's been a mix of overly attentive or could use a bit more attention. I enjoy the atmosphere as it has some tvs which usually have futbol on!
