Unpretentious. Outstanding food and service. I love Cruz del Sur! If you’re in José Ignacio then by all means you must go to Cruz del Sur. This is now in my top 20 restaurants in the world list!

Hard to say whether the food, atmosphere or service was the best part of our experience. Each dish was more beautifully presented and delicious than the last. We dined for lunch and had an amazing experience- would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Update: Unfortunately, Cruz del Sur Cocina suffered a devastating fire on the morning of 29 January 2021, and the restaurant and food stall will be closed for the foreseeable future. I hope they will be back in business quickly, as this is a real loss to the dining scene in José Ignacio.
When they are back, these are some things you should know about Cruz del Sur Cocina:
(1) The food is farm-to table, with lots of vegetables you will find nowhere else in UY that I know. You can buy the veggies to take home, if you are staying somewhere with a kitchen. Seriously, the veggies are the absolute best I have found anywhere in Uruguay! If I lived in JI, I would shop here every day!
(2) The lunch menu is very much above average, and SUPER fresh (featuring well prepared salads, sandwiches, soups). I have tried the shrimp tacos, which are tasty (I'd love it if they did fish tacos also!); gazpacho, which is is really nice, too; and the beet salad, which is the standout. Seriously, it might be the single best dish I have anywhere in Uruguay!
(3) Unusually for Uruguay, portions are small for the price, which doesn't bother me at all, but YMMV. To me, Cruz del Sur have nailed the portion size.
(4) The wine selection is simply stupendous. There are maybe 20 labels in total, so not a huge selection, but everything is excellent! They may have the best curated wine selection I have seen in UY, at decent prices, especially if you have the bank card that provides a 20% discount.
(5) The location and ambience is wonderful. It's on the plaza in the center of town, is well shaded, and bustling from 14:00-15:30. I could easily spend many a happy afternoon here!
(5) The staff are professional and efficient and proactive - if you have spent any time in Montevidéo, you will know how valuable this combo is.
To conclude, this is in my top handful of recommended restaurants in UY. It is simple, but super! I recommend it highly.
A great spot in José Ignacio with delicious and organic food. Most of their vegetables come from their garden.
We had the Corvina and the seabass. What a feat for our taste buds!
Staff is very professional and attentive.
The shop sells a variety of items like honey, soaps, etc.

This is good. Amazingly professional and alert and kind and friendly and swift staff. Kitchen totally delivers. I would suggest: if in José Ignacio, this is your „must“, the rest is optional.
2nd visit in two nights. Well worth it. Best pizza I’ve had for a long, long, long time. Gracias!!
