We went there for Valentine's Day and could not have had a better experience. We have been wanting to go there for a long time after driving by frequently and we finally pulled the trigger. It definitely has "vintage charm," kind of like an old Wisconsin supper club. The cod was delicious as well as the pork shish-kabob. Our server Maria was very pleasant and attentive and provided lots of history about the place. Make sure to stop in the bar to check out the old photos. The only negative we could think of is that the interior is a little dated but it also provides some of the charm. We will be back with family. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4

Their so called "Sarasota potatoes" are actually old, stale and oily potato chips - horrible. The "sweet roasted corn & peas" are frozen microwaved veggies. The "rack of lamb" was actually 4 bones but really delicious! The salmon was also delicious! We will not be going back. Our server although nice was a bit snippy. I asked for the creamy garlic dressing on the side. When it arrived it was a glob of mayonnaise with garlic, nothing creamy about it. I commented that it looked like mayonnaise. She promptly told me "that's what makes it creamy". The salad is just a bowl of lettuce - nothing else...no tomatoes, green peppers or anything. They were nice enough to offer us a baked potato, in lieu of the chips. Unfortunately by the time it arrived we were done and over it. It was our first and last time there. We now have a better understanding of why it's only open 2 days a week. C'est la vie! Don't bother!! Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 1

This restaurant is almost never open, and when they are open they only take a couple of customers. The meal that was served was just one piece of meat on an empty plate, and the table was set with a bowl of potato chips and a bowl of peas and corn as the side dishes. The appetizer salad took about 45 minutes to come out, and it was just plain lettuce straight out of a bag. It's a mystery how this place is even still in business. Don't waste your time. Still popular after all these years! Very friendly service. Lamb chops & the cod are delicious. And the Greek rice pudding is the best you'll find anywhere. But don't shake you empty martini glass at the server--or she'll remember you for 40 years. J/k

The appetizer was so good. I loved the warm roles, even asked for more which the server told me we'd have to wait . The new roles tasted just as good but smalller and darker. Greek Chicken was recommended and the seasoning was incredible and there was a large serving., got to bring some home. I wasn't impressed by the small, bare salad or the bland vegetables. I did enjoy the wine too. Pricey food overall really good.

Ambiance was what I was hoping for when selecting Charcoal Oven for a nice dinner date. Beyond that, the food was bland, chintzy and way overpriced. I even had my leftovers brought to me in a Jewel Osco plastic bag, which I suspect is where they purchased the $50 steak that I ordered; and yes, they serve potato chips as your "potato" side. Unacceptable. All told, I'm not a fan of giving negative reviews, but in this case, the money spent truly was not worth the experience. I will not be returning here, but I do hope the establishment turns it around to what it seemingly used to be like.
LOVE this place! Soooo much is homemade from the bread to the salad dressings to the desserts. And the décor is AMAZING! Family owned/operated for something like 70 years. Chat with Maria for some great historical stories. Ex: Elizabeth Taylor ate here. Why? Ask Maria!
I wanted to see what this place about being a food blogger and all. We came a few min past 5pm when the place opens, but the chef wasn't even there. He didn't arrive til 5:30. We looked at the menu and everything was overpriced. Sirloin steak was 48?! Yes you get soup, salad and sides but we didn't get to pick our soup nor sides yet the couple behind us got to pick how they want their potatoes (mashed, which is what I prefer but got chips instead...) The corn was definitely canned. The pastichio sauce tasted canned and had barely any meat and seemed low quality. The leg of lamb was ok...not the best lamb I've had. The bread didn't come with butter so I had to ask for it. The bread, salad and soup tasted good though. All I have to say is treat everyone equally. Just because someone is a regular it's not fair to just throw whatever to a new customer not asking how they want their sides or steak cooked. The atmosphere was nice though and old fashioned.
How is this place in business with such great options in the area? The service was really really slow but that's because they are staffed on a Friday night with 1 server who is overworked not bad. One hour in we got our salads which we felt was a major accomplishment! Dinner has come and gone and while the lamb chops my wife had were good the Greek chicken was marginal at best. I'm left with a bill from a good restaurant with a Burger King taste in my mouth. And how hilarious the owner copies and pastes offensive replies to these review. So sad.
