À propos
This bar and Ellis County Museum can be both really attractive for tourists. The chef at Big Al's Down The Hatch cooks good nacho chips, bacon and fried chicken. According to the reviewers' opinions, waiters offer tasty waffles here. You will be offered good draft beer or good wine. Clients don't like ice tea at this place. It's easy to find this spot due to its convenient location. Most guests state that the staff is nice. Enjoyable service is something visitors agree upon here. Most people highlight that the dishes are offered for low prices. The modern decor and quiet atmosphere let guests feel relaxed here. But this bar hasn't received a high rating from Google users.

Well…..it was “good”? I went “off hours” so there was hardly anyone there. I got good service. The corn nuggets were quite yummy! The shrimp on the po’boy was good but the sandwich lacked flavor. Just mayo & lettuce. Much, much better in Galveston. The sweet tater fries were good. Crispy. Which was nice. I got a “Tall” beer for $8.50. Gotta hope they have better prices during happy hour. Came in at 1:30pm so the place wasn't busy. Ordered 20 wings and asked about sides? How much? As it's not listed on the menu. Waitress looks stunned and says. "They're all different" okay not the answer I wanted but we proceeded to ask, how much for a house salad? "or $4-5?" husband says okay we will take that. She asks what dressing? What do you have we asked again? Ranch and Blue Cheese. Do you have Thousand Island? No ranch and blue cheese she responds. Ranch we answer. Then she asks do you want a side? My husband says no just the salad. She responds "oh you want a salad?" what dressing? And then she has to think what salad dressing they have. When the wings came out. Several were undercooked and red inside (See pictures) as he attempted to eat some checking each one, finding more and more undercooked and the bite or two we did have tasted like old chicken. When she finally came over to check on us. My husband showed her the undercooked wings and said just take these off my ticket I'll eat the salad and pay you for it and the drinks. Her response was " I can't just take them off. I'll have to talk to the food manager. We'll apparently she talked to the food manger because next we know she drops off the bill and walks away. A little upset. But we were only charged for the salad and a diet coke (not a tea - (but maybe their the same we didn't care enough to argue at this point) Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person $1–10 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
Just so happened to be in the area & wanted something different. It was a really nice place to experience. It's well laid out & they really attend to your needs. We also met Big Al & he was very personable & also asked us if we needed anything & made sure we were taken care of. The food came out in a timely manner. The Big AL Balls was the best thing we ordered. We would like to try some of the other things on the menu. The jalapeno needs to be cooked a little more so that they're not so raw & a little more bacon on it, but it taste really good. I think the owner has given up, here’s my honest review. The billboards worked and we exited and drove into town and into the restaurant. The staff were amazing and helped each other out. My wife and I ordered sweet tea, it was delicious, but the billboard money must have dipped into the cup fund. I’ve only seen cups that small at a dentist, used to rinse your mouth after a deep clean. Photo attached. The ribs were promoted, so I got them- sides were macaroni and mash potatoes. I was embarrassed for them by how grainy the mash potatoes were, as if they were proud of using boxed mashed potatoes. See photo, you can see the flakes, needs more whisk, come on guys. No added heavy cream or real seasonings, it was so basic, like nobody cares back there. The mac and cheese was great, only because I actually like velveeta cheese from the box. Homemade Mac and cheese and real mashed potatoes is not hard and is expected from a restaurant that has several billboards on the highway and boasts that notable people travel to visit this establishment. I love black owned restaurants because the food has such pride, but the obvious lackadaisical shortcuts wasn’t worth the exit from the interstate. The ribs… see photo. They don’t even put the sauce on the meat, they called it BBQ ribs. The ribs were nice and tender, but it’s obvious they were frozen for a while. The bread was amazing, and my wife loved her fried chicken and fries. Overall the food was ok, we left full, but it was more like mom whipping something together last minute, not a restaurant that has passion for the product anymore. And the cups… come on. Good luck on your endeavors

I had reservations about this restaurant due to the poor quality of the photographs on Yelp. But I'm definitely glad I joined my family on Sunday, Funday. Our waitress was phenomenal (I don't remember her name), but her hair was black & blonde. Everything was delicious, fresh, hot, and reasonably priced. I ordered a pizza with a Tokyo iced tea, and my lady ordered a chicken quesadilla. It is truly a cool environment with plenty of televisions to enjoy any game. There's one thing I've been wanting to try forever... Rocky mountain oysters (aka fried sheep testicles). I googled Rocky mountain oysters near me and Big Al's was one of the first ones to come up. I got very excited that it was close to me and I kept talking about going with my friend to try them. Finally the day came and I took a trip to the restaurant. The restaurant was fine and the service was actually pretty good. I went ahead and ordered big Al's juicy balls and was very excited to try them. They were finally ready and we're set right in front of me. My eyes were the size of saucers as I hungrily looked at the delightful appetizer. I dug in, dipped it in ranch, and took a bite. Very unfortunately I discovered that it was a fried ball if potatoes. Don't get me wrong... They were delicious and I really enjoyed them but I wanted Rocky mountain oysters! My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined. The burger was pretty good and the fries were ok but a little soggy and wilted. I think we missed the brunch crowd and too early for evening. Wasn't too crowded, we ordered the pretzel. Delicious! And a couple drinks. Looks like they have entertainment, there was a stage area and wrestling ring. Will return if I am in area again. Located in town square, may require a short walk to restaurant. Free parking. Karaoke? Sad excuse for it... The list was cut off for the DJ's wife and kid plus 2nd DJ to showboat. Couldn't add a few extra songs for paying customers.. I mean, you own the Karaoke equipment, you can sing and much as you want and stop those damn annoying stock sounds with claps and goal horn, even during the song someone is singing. Overpriced small drinks are less than desirable. Want to do a setup for folks to have a good time? Take a bit more effort in planning your place out to ensure the audience has ample space to see the singers and feel comfortable stop overcharging. The food was amazing! We had chips & salsa, onion rings, bacon jalapeños and burgers & fries. I have nothing bad to say about the food & atmosphere. The only issue was that there was only one server & she was very busy. Her name is Kinsey & she is super nice and such a hard worker. She could definitely use some help though. There was a couple who walked out because they had to seat themselves & wait for service. Anyway, that was the only problem. Other than that it was a 5 star experience. Wish we could have met Big Al. Maybe next time Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person $30–50 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Jalapenos
Loved this place! Right downtown among the historic square. Al's history was a good read - quite the entrepreneur! I had their Friday Fish Special. Yum! 2 huge pieces of catfish, cooked Louisiana style, crispy + spicy! Homemade fries and the portions were Huge! I loved the presentation on the platters and the simple boojie sports bar feel of the place! TVs all over, and Karoke was setting up just as I was leaving. Ericka, the bartender, was efficient + friendly. I also met AL, and he's all the personality that they say and more - just a Great, super friendly local guy! 😋👍👍🫶 Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person $10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
