Small family run restaurant, with Japanese izakaya decor. Didn’t expect much, but the food turned out surprisingly good. Worth a try if in town, in spite of many other dining options. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $50–60 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I took my grand daughter as she really wanted sushi. I rang ahead and chef was happy to make it for her. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my meal (not sushi) . Was very friendly service and lovely place to chat away with Miss 5 year old. We will definitely be returning. We started off coming to the restaurant at night, and asked for the toilet, after following their instructions, and went to the pub next door quickly. So that problem solved. We ordered hot sake, and it came without a serviet, so we had to wait for it to cool off a bit. We waited a while for the food... so be very patient... As for the quality of the food, it is worth the wait, if you have the time to wait! If not for this, I would rate it much higher.

Been at Aqua under previous owners and had a great time. Can’t say the same thing under the new owners. Though they try really hard, this ain’t a Japanese restaurant as it lacks the right ingredients and cooking style. The owner is FOH and as such is very friendly, but, when serving a bowl your thumb should not be in it (that’s a big no-no). Portions are way too big for Japanese style not every dish needs mayonnaise on top. Food took very long to arrive. Would like to visit again and see if improved. The ramen is a far cry from the original Japanese ramen. Tasted more like instant noodles with lots of vegetables and we paid $24 per bowl. The crispy chicken was good though. Price per person $40–50 Food: 1 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3

Reckon over rated. Food was alright. Stir fried noodles was a bit salty. The fried chicken was the highlight, tender and juicy. Could do with a bit more dipping sauce tough. Very small place but very kind service. Need to be early or waiting time was a bit long.

Ordered takeaways from here last night without realising they had only been open for two nights under new owners! Very friendly owners with plenty of experience and industry knowledge, the food was excellent and I can only imagine it will get better as they get into the groove of running a Japanese restaurant. I would recommend that everyone should give this place a go and I’m sure it’ll be popular during the upcoming ski season! I originally left one star without comment. It’s interesting to see the manager/owner responded in a twisted way and called me one star. Here is the story. We have been skiing on Mt Hutt for years and satisfied with all restaurants. This is the only restaurant in Methven we wouldn’t recommend and put a one star review. Friends ate there and said very very salty. Unfortunately we didn’t take their advice. Went in at dinner time, there was NO one (not a good sign). Whole restaurant smelled disgusting! We were about to leave. This man came out scanned us from head to toe without any greeting like “hello”. His later on words was shocking unprofessional and rude! We felt very insulting and left straight away. Very wired experience. Had wonderful experience with almost all restaurants in Methven. Except Aqua! Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
