The Great American Steak & Chicken House is pretty near Cool Off Water Chute. Based on the guests' opinions, waiters offer good chicken steaks, mac-n-cheese and lettuce salads here. While we enjoy come to branson this was our first time here.. I really didn't expect alot as we pulled up there was only 4 cars in the lot. Other places are busy. Our server was really nice and understanding. While the fish and shrimp was good. I ordered the buffet, my sisters ordered from the menu. Well that didn't go well. They had tea that was unsweetened after asking for it twice to say it was a fresh batch 🤔. The bathroom smells of sewer. Now the entertainment was great Mr. Smooth put on a show and we enjoyed it. I felt like I was missing out because I had never come here until today. I wish I had saved my money though. AWFUL experience. The buffet was limited and very old. At $15 a person it’s absurd. I don’t even know how they stay in business. The bathroom smelled like it overflowed with sewage it was absolutely disgusting and overwhelming. The only good thing on the buffet was the fried okra. My husband loves chicken, and lots of it, so we came here. Regretting that decision. We were there at about 530-6 on a Sunday evening The place was dead, and apparently had been all day. The dressings, noodle salad, potato salad, etc... on the buffet all had dried crusty layers on them. You had to push it around and dig under to get "fresher" food. My guess it was out all day, if not longer. The staff was just standing around at times, maybe they should have stirred foods now and then to keep them looking fresher and more appealing. My husband said there wasn't much chicken on the buffet for being the Chicken House. They did have some shrimp and crawdads on the buffet. Not impressed at all! The only positive thing I can say is that I don't eat meat, so I just had the salad bar which was supposed to be $15, but the waitress rang it up as an add on to my husband's full buffet, so it ended up being only $6 for me. This was our first time there. We happen to get away to Branson and this place was across from where we were staying. So we decided to eat. They had a buffet. There was also live music, a gentleman sang while we ate, which he was good and it was nice. Our waiter was great and funny. The food was good but for the price, I thought there would be more variety and choices. I loved the decor in the restaurant. The food is not good. We looked at the lunch buffet and it looked like it has sat out for hours. We ordered just some appetizers instead. Pretzel bites were so over done we couldn't eat them. Fried deviled eggs are definitely something that needs to be removed from the menu. Fried pickels were so salty we only ate a few. The wait staff was great. The food, not so good. From a restaurant in the middle of a tourist town, I'd expect a bit better tasting food. I tried the chicken and dumplings and it was pretty sad. It looked unappetizing and tasted kind of old. My husband got lemon chicken and it was the driest chicken he has had a quite a long time. He couldn't eat the green beans because they were cold and a bit slimy. The atmosphere was good in the main part of the restaurant but I went into the bathroom and it smelled like someone pooped in the garbage can and it almost made me throw up. Because I don't like leaving just a bad review with no idea of how I think it could be better, here is what I think would be a good change: make the dumplings look like dumplings, make the gravy more creamy yellow and less soupy gray, don't overcook the chicken since that's your selling point, have a janitor/staff member check in on the bathroom every hour or two to make sure everything is decent for customers, add an automatic air freshener in the bathroom to make it smell nicer. All in all, it wasn't a complete dud. Just needs a little TLC here and there. The giant chicken was cool too. I wanted to love this big chickened house that lured me in but I just didn’t. It took about ten minutes to get drinks, no one mentioned there was breakfast other than the buffet until after we fixed our buffet plates. The restaurant advertised that it serves Starbucks drinks but it doesn’t anymore. (Still even on menu) the food was okay but it wasn’t great.
