I’ve been dinning in and ordering out from this restaurant for a little over 20 years. In that time the service has been very good. The staff has been friendly, efficient, dependable, even kind. Over 20+ years the food has been consistently well prepared and and plated. We know that whether it’s take out or dine in we are going to eat very well & have plenty to spare! Though this is my 1st review for El Gitano, it is not the 1st time I've eaten there. The food here is always delicious, and although I didn't feel I could rate the service or atmosphere this time, I will say rhat the staff has always been super nice and makes you feel welcome. For this one, though, it was delivery, and honestly, it was a paid lunch while setting up the Boot Barn a couple/few doors down. They ordered a bunch of stuff and gave us a choice - fajitas burritos, 2 or 3 soft shell tacos, and a 3rd choice that I can't recall. I had the fajitas burrito, and was not disappointed at all. It was nicely large, therefore worth the price as far as I'm concerned, and not just big but perfectly filled for the size of tortilla they use. I don't believe anything else could have been added without it tearing. On top of that, the flavor of all the ingredients put together was fantastic. It had a little heat to it but not overly so, though I believe you'd be able to spice it up if preferred. Lastly, and also important to me, it was superbly filling - more so than I thought it would be when it was handed to me, in all honestly. I would definitely recommend anyone to eat at El Gitano if you haven't had the pleasure. Thank you, El Gitano, it was delicious!! Welcoming staff and large portions for the price. This is my go to “take myself out to lunch” spot. Usually have a daily special on tequila and always have a cold beer ready for you. The house-made salsa is so good. Chill, dark, and cozy atmosphere. Hope to see this place get more business cause they deserve it. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Plentiful portions that guarantee you will not leave hungry. We ordered the Carne Asada, Pork Colorado Enchilada and a Negra Modelo. The food tasted good overall lacking citrus and refinement. The salsa tasted granular, as did the steak, and the chips mealy. The tortillas were doughy not grilled. The Modela was served in a frosty beer mug and brought to the table with the frozen overflow left for us to clean as it thawed into a mess. Great food at this Mexican restaurant! The fajitas and tamales were excellent! And there is a whole vegetarian section on the (large) menu. The prices are a little high, but the portion sizes are large and all of us went home with enough for tomorrow's lunch. One of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in Bellingham. Their menu is massive and the food is delicious. I usually go for the carne Asada or the Hawaiian fajitas. Occasionally if I’m feeling bold, I’ll get the molcajete which is incredible (and so much food). The staff know us by first name, know what we drink without us having to tell them and are super friendly. A fixture in Bellingham you don’t want to miss. EDIT May 2021. I advise CALLING IN your order, don't do it online. They don't know how to coordinate apparently and my order was completed 30 minutes after the time I was given. One hour total. Great food but.... That's too long. Original review... WOW. Excellent and varied vegetarian options with HUGE serving sizes. We got delivery and the items were still warm and tasty when they arrived. We ordered four entrees: tofu enchiladas, spinach enchiladas, veggie burrito, and veggie tamales. All were excellent (though the veggie tamales could use more veggies and less corn). Very good chips and fresh salsa also. Highly recommended!
