I discovered Van Roy coffee when it was served to me at a downtown Cleveland Restaurant quite a few years ago. It was the best coffee that I had ever tasted, so I asked my server what it was. I have been drinking it ever since and I really think no other coffee can compare.
The Short Story: Best coffee I have ever had.
Longer story: I grew up in the greater Cleveland area, heard Van Rooy had good coffee but never had it. Long since moved away, but somehow the name popped int my mind and when I looked them up, they were still in business. They are friendly and helped me order a few flavors (Hotel which is a light roast, Gourmet blend, Costa Rican and Dekaffo which are medium roast, and Dark 'n' Stormy which as expected is a dark roast). I tend to mix my coffee half decaf and half regular. The coffee is fantastic, light (not weak, just not harsh) has a full flavor profile and does not taste bitter or burnt. I think this is what coffee is supposed to taste like and most of us have been duped into thinking coffee was supposed to taste like a combination of burnt toast and bitter raw cranberries to help keep the sugar and creamer businesses very profitable ;)
I always used to consider coffee just something hot on a cold day and needed lots of sugar and cream to kill the bitter burnt taste of most coffee I have drank in my life. This was a different experience, because now I use half or less sugar as I used to, because I can taste the full coffee flavor and not have to overcome bitterness.
When purchasing or making price comparisons, realize the price of Van Rooy Coffee is for a full one pound bag of premium well roasted coffee, many coffee brands at the grocery store are sold in bags ranging between 10 oz for decaf and 12 oz for regular.
Enjoy a great cup of coffee.
