We were passing through Omaha today and have enjoyed stopping by the other Sweet Mags location. It is closed Monday’s, but we were delighted that the newer location is open when the other is closed. For us, this one didn’t have the same charm as the original location, but it’s still a nice, clean, industrial-chic vibe.
The baked items seem to be the same, which I am sure is the goal. We ordered the Peach-Ginger-Poppyseed scone, the salted honey cookie, the lemon crunch cookie and the bourbon pecan square today.
My husband said the peach-ginger-poppyseed scone was unique and “num-num.” He enjoys strong ginger flavors, whereas I only like mild ones. So for me, the ginger wasn’t a nice compliment in this bake, it kind of took over. The texture of the scone was nice, but I’m curious how I’d like it if the ginger was toned back a bit.
The salted honey cookie was a nice flavor, and I always enjoy salt. Neither my husband nor I could detect honey flavor, but the flavor seemed familiar—maybe because of other Sweet Mags bakes I’ve tried.. It was a very soft texture. Overall, it was just an okay cookie. Decent flavor, but boring texture and no honey flavor. I’d like to have some honeycomb chunks or something for a more interesting texture, and perhaps salt over more of the cookie, not so concentrated on the center of a large cookie.
The lemon crunch cookie was my husband’s favorite today. He liked the texture and thought the flavors went well together. I’m not sure why it’s named lemon “crunch,” because there wasn’t anything crunchy about it. It was a very soft cookie. But there were white chocolate chunks, which I was grateful for, as they added to the flavor and redeemed the texture. Though I enjoyed the lemon flavor, it was a very sweet cookie that I thought could use just a touch more salt to bring out the subtle flavors.
I’ve had the bourbon pecan square a few times at the other location. The first one I had was my favorite by far, and I keep chasing that. But I think it’s time for me to accept that this is a different thing and it’s just not my style. It’s very sweet—I can detect no salt in the shortbread/pastry-like crust or in the filling. I’m sure it delights many, but I like a little more salt, larger pecan chunks and maybe a caramelized texture on top instead of something so soft throughout the whole thing.
The service was fine, but not overly inviting or friendly. No greeting when we entered, even though we were the only patrons at the moment. (We got a much warmer greeting when we stopped at the gas station down the road). Also, parking in front is limited.
By way of information, their point of sell system is one that automatically asks for tips, which we didn’t particularly feel desirous to offer given the less than welcoming vibe coming in—mostly all they did was grab our cookies for us.
Take a moment out of your life and stop in for some absolutely delicious treats! From scones to cookies, you can never go wrong! The strawberry cheesecake cookies are beyond amazing! Service is excellent!
