A typical greasy spoon diner as far as the food goes, but with amazing service. The woman who waited on our table was super patient, and made sure that all of our orders were correct before putting the ticket in (no mean feat with the grill behind her and 4 hard of hearing older people asking questions and talking over each other ordering the food). Old school diner with killer food! On my last trip to the area, I stopped in to eat breakfast before a work meeting. Well, I misjudged my time and really had to hurry. I told the guy at the counter about my mess up and he got my food to me so fast I could barely believe it, and it was delicious! I appreciated the respect for my time and the service was great. The hotel breakfast did not seem appealing, so we decided to go across the street to this place. It's been a while since I've been to a true diner where it's fairly crowded, and the servers are extremely nice. I gotta tell you, it was worth the visit. My daughter got the steak and eggs and had the Country Fried Steak breakfast. The food was really good and I can't wait to visit again. It’s a true diner experience in every sense of the word. We came on a Sunday morning. Very packed but move semi quickly though so you won’t be waiting that long. Really close quarters. If you’re sitting and eating there’s a high chance that just gonna be someone staring at you and your food 😁 Automatic social pressure to eat fast and leave because everyone is like 3 feet away from you watching your table to see when you’re gonna be done so they can have your spot. Reasonable prices and a college crowd. Don’t expect much. The owner operator here seems like a very friendly guy. Eager to please. Come for the experience - not for the food. This is the only restaurant that is open 24 hours in Champaign. If you’re going to visit, you must visit in the middle of the night to get the enriched experience that everyone talks about. So I did just that. Came in at around 1am a few nights ago. It had a real cozy feel to it. Staff were really friendly and it felt like a diner (which is exactly what this is). It was busy also. Ordered the breakfast burrito - this thing is LOADED with hash browns, gravy, eggs, and a meat of your choice (I chose ham). It was fine, and was tasty in the moment, but had a hard time finishing it. Would definitely give the hash browns and eggs another try but would be okay without a tortilla or gravy. Another huge plus is the prices - most items are priced on the cheaper end. You can walk away at the end of your meal paying $10 including tip. Pretty good if you ask me. Will be back. It was our wedding anniversary and we had planned to celebrate at another restaurant which held special meaning to us. That restaurant is permanently closed and we remembered that Merry Ann's came highly recommended by colleagues, so we went there. I had a waffle with vanilla ice cream, a special request, and the server (didn't get his name) recommended whipped cream topping. It was perfect! I like that the waffle is soft and fluffy, and so fragrant on its own, but perfect with the toppings. My husband keeps a special diet so he only had the fries and onion rings. He enjoyed every bit of it and I loved the onion rings after stealing one from him. The onion rings were not oily and fried to just the right crispiness, and soft on the inside. I would return to try other meals on the menu. Finally, the server was great with just enough small talk that made you feel welcomed and appreciated but not too much that steal your time completely. Definitely highly recommended! How I rate:- 1-2 stars - Businesses/professionals that do not meet the minimum standard of service. 3 stars - Businesses/professionals that meet the minimum standard of care/service and nothing more; or when they try to compensate for the lack of service by being really nice. 4 stars - Businesses/professionals that take extra effort to be nice in addition to meeting the minimum expected standard. 5 stars - Exemplary service/products and customer service/care.
