À propos
After a long walk around Rotary Nature Center and Waterfowl Refuge, go to this bar and have a rest here. Italian dishes are to be tried here. The truth is that you will really like perfectly cooked mushroom risotto, meatballs and pumpkin salads. If hungry, come here for tasty fruitcake, chocolate mousse and cheesecakes. Most likely, you'll come back to MAMA Oakland later to taste good chianti, beer or white wine. A homely atmosphere and beautiful interior make this place so good. Many visitors consider the staff efficient. Service at this spot is something one can name fine. This bar won the Bib Gourmand award for tasty meals at moderate prices.

Great quality food and service was amazing. Sounds like the menu changes every day but I truly think you can’t go wrong with their pre-fix. We added a bottle of wine and the meatballs. The portions were perfect. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $50–100

Came by for a nice night out right as it opened. We booked the wrong reservation date but they still managed to squeeze us two in as long as we left in 1 hour 45 min, which was plenty of time to eat. We had the fixed menu and added short ribs and a bottle of wine. I noticed mostly couples coming in although there was a large family group as well. The shop is decorated in retro pink and green colors. It’s a cozy ambiance. You definitely feel like the staff cares about your experience and they know their stuff about the menu. They took away each set of utensils as we finished each part of the menu, and they wiped the tables too. We got one of each option in the fixed menu to share between the two of us. Tomato salad - Beautifully arranged. Different shapes of heirloom and cherry tomatoes. The tartness of the tomatoes shone through the light sauce. Butternut squash soup - Creamy and acidic. It felt warming. There were only like 2 pieces of prosciutto in this. Mushroom paparadelle - Also creamy and the noodles were thinner than I anticipated, thus making it lighter than I expected. Completely different from the tomato-based pasta so it balances things out if you can try both! Tomato - I’m a fan of bright tomato sauces in pasta. This felt like it had a bigger ratio of tomato to meat. The shape of the pieces made it quick for me to eat, although I didn’t realize how full I was getting until later on. Short ribs - Less heavy than I anticipated as the bones were big and there was less meat. I think there must have been 4 pieces of meat overall. The amount of sauce balanced things out. The accompanying salad was bitter which I liked. It cut through the richness of the meat. They waited for us to finish our pastas before bringing the short ribs out. Makes sense for table space but we were expecting to eat it with our pastas. The portions were just right! I ate a bit of bread before coming here and felt like I should’ve been a bit hungrier. As with most pastas, the fullness hit me as soon as I got home. The wines had interesting descriptions in the menu. The staff was happy to answer any questions we had. Overall this was a romantic date night experience. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $50–100 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
Had a delicious experience, opted for the extra course and I may not ever need to eat again. The food is amazing but the atmosphere is still casual. A great combo. We sat at the chef’s counter which was nice for a date night out. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

This place deserves ALL the rave reviews it has been getting! Mama is so so good, serving up italian staples in a cute location in a buzzy area in Oakland, and for such a good price point. The pasta dishes were delicious, the corn soup appetizer was almost life changing, and the service was super friendly and helpful. The only thing we didn’t love was the dessert, but it was still pretty good. For $40 a person, it was a great deal! Wife and I had our anniversary dinner here and enjoyed it a lot. The menu is fixed, but we splurged and got a nice bottle of wine and extra entree as well! The food is that good - simple yet elegant, and of course delicious! Must try for a romantic night out or with friends and family Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Fantastic food and service! We got the Yukon Potato Chowder and the Focaccia Bread for our appetizer. The Focaccia Bread with the fig jam was heavenly! For our pasta dishes, we had the vegetarian versions of the Bucatini & Mama’s Sugo and the Wild Mushroom Risotto. The dishes were excellent, and the service was top-notch! Mama Oakland is a modern, welcoming nook serving seasonally minded, three-course Italian dinners & a wide range of thoughtful wines. I would ideally give this restaurant a 4.5 out of 5 because of one thing (read review below), but that's not possible here, so I'm rounding it up to 5. The service at this restaurant was top-notch. You are basically getting a Michelin star restaurant experience for a very reasonable price. From getting seated to taking our order to cleaning our table and replacing the utensils before bringing out the new dish, their service was phenomena from the beginning till the end. Our server was very attentive and polite and friendly. The restaurant has indoor, outdoor, and bar seating areas. We were seated inside. The ambiance is pretty relaxed. Since the indoor space is not that big, the place felt very packed, especially with all the foot traffic. Mama Oakland offers a prix-fixe menu, which includes a starter (soup/salad), an entree, and a dessert. You also have the option for some add ons like bread, shrimp, or steak. Our prix fixe menu was $39/person. My girlfriend and I picked the same items for our appetizer and entree but different items for dessert. Our prix fixe menu included STARTER- 1. Sweet Corn Soup 2. Early Girl Tomato Caesar Salad ADD ON :: House-Baked Herbed Focaccia PASTA- 1. Parmesan Polenta & Mama's Sugo 2. Fetuccinie con Crema al Pecorino ADD ON :: MAMA's Famous Pan-Fried Beef & Pork Meatballs +10 Optional Entrée for the Table (serves 2+) 1. Roasted Head On Prawns 2. Pan Seared New York Steak DESSERT- 1. Meyer lemon Sponge Cake 2. Tiramisu From the starter menu, we picked the sweet corn soup. From pasta, we picked the parmesan polenta, and we tried both desserts. The corn soup was very creamy and delicious. There was a small portion of veggies and meat in there, which was a great touch and a good contrast to the smooth texture of the soup. The polenta was really good as well. It had a smooth texture with slight graininess. It was very rich and creamy in flavor. The braised beef was cooked well and was juicy. Desserts is where I have some critique. The tiramisu that we ordered was not a traditional tiramius, and that's okay. It was still delicious as a whole, but the mascarpone cream was very dense and not smooth. Lemon sponge cake was soft, light, and amazing. The cake had just the right balance of sweetness and citrusy taste. The compote, on the other hand, was tart. Those 2 flavors combined were a hit and miss for me. Overall, it's a great restaurant with amazing food, service, and experience. It's definitely worth a visit. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $50–100 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4

Seasonal prix fixe, the most amazing bread, and a great wine selection - what more could you ask for? Everything was delicious and since they rotate their menu I am excited to come back and taste more (but please never change that focaccia, I have been dreaming of that crispy salty crust and the pesto butter for weeks!!)
